WENDY CALLAHAN
prepared by Arnhild Buckhurst Wendy is one of those rare creatures, a native New Yorker. Born and bred on Long Island with her two older sisters, she enjoyed long summer days and having the only swimming pool in the neighborhood. There were also many trips up to Troy to visit her grandparents and picnics at Lake George. As her maternal grandparents were originally from Vermont, there were countless days spent up to the farm country watching the trees tapped for syrup and enjoying maple sugar candy.
In school Wendy was very involved in sports. She played on her school teams in softball, basketball and volleyball. Her favorite was softball, however, where her grammar school won the Long Island CYO championship three years in a row. She contributed as a pitcher and an outfielder, having one of the highest batting averages in the league. Sadly a skiing incident in her junior year of high school ended her school sports career.
For college Wendy decided to stay local and go to St. John’s University in Jamaica, Queens. She majored in Communication Arts where she enjoyed TV Production classes as well as Film Study and Journalism. As one of her professors produced the film tributes at Lincoln Center, she was privileged to attend programs honoring director George Cukor and comedian Bob Hope, where she mingled with such celebrities as Angela Lansbury, Lauren Bacall and Katharine Hepburn. Part time jobs at Alexander’s Department Store and Reliance Savings and Loan kept her in spending money. An internship at the school newspaper helped her land a part time job at Newsday recording high school game statistics and writing the occasional blurb or feature story.
Armed with a Bachelor of Science degree with a minor in Business, Wendy hit New York City looking for full time work. Her first ‘real’ job was at an advertising agency as an Administrative Assistant in the Media Department. Tired of waiting for an opening as a spot estimator, she took a position in the Finance Department where she thrived doing budgets and working with the CFO.
Deciding she enjoyed finance, Wendy looked for another position in that discipline and found a home at Hellmuth, Obata & Kassabaum as a Project Accountant. Thus began a long career in architecture. After ten years at HOK she moved on and has worked at many architectural and engineering firms, including Mancini Duffy, Perkins +Will, URS and Skidmore Owings and Merrill. Currently Wendy is at Davis, Brody Bond LLP where she is the Director of Project Management and Analysis. Her position entails project controls and helping establish project budgets as well as creating a budget for the office.
Wendy’s SDA involvement began at Mancini Duffy in 1997 when a Semaphore consultant mentioned the organization and all its benefits. She became a member shortly thereafter and has enjoyed all it has to offer, such as Lunchtime Roundtables, Job Bank, Forum Discussions and all the interesting topics on the mailing list.
Wendy enjoys playing golf, reading, following the Mets, and especially traveling. She still lives on Long Island with her husband of twenty years, Patrick.
