Tours

Each year NYSDA hosts at least one guided tour of a major architectural project in New York. We have previously toured the new Hearst headquarters on Eighth Avenue; braved the heat and toured the Whitehall and St. George Ferry Terminals and afterwards attended a Staten Island Yankees game including ballpark fare for dinner; toured the award-winning New York Times building; viewed the amazing Temple Emanu El; and received a special tour of the Lower East Side Tenement Museum.

2011 Tours

We recently conducted a tour of the new academic building at Cooper Union designed by Morphosis Architects with Gruzen Samton Architects. We are currently working on putting together a tour of Columbia University’s new Northwest Corner Building designed by José Rafael Moneo in collaboration with Davis Brody Bond.  We hope you’ll be able to join us.

Does your firm have a project you’d like to show off? Let us know by contacting us at info@sdanyc.org.

SDA New York toured the High Line in 2010!

We took a walking tour of the High Line conducted by landscape architect Ellen Neises from Field Operations and structural engineer Andre Georges from Robert Silman Associates.  If you missed it you may be interested in the handouts available in the Member section (available to NY Chapter members only) under Program Summaries.

Fellow SDA NY Chapter member  Leni Schwendinger lead us on a tour of her firm’s project, the Triple Bridge Gateway at the Port Authority Bus Terminal.

June Tour: The Fulton Street Transit Center

08 June 2012 08:30
Tour

We have been given a unique opportunity to tour one of the largest new infrastructure projects in NY City, the new Fulton Street Transit Center, currently under construction.

The tour is limited to only 20 participants, so reservations are “first come/first serve,” with priority to SDA Members. The glistening $1.4 billion Fulton Street Transit Center, slated to open in June 2014, will feature glass tiles and reflective walls, suffused in natural sunlight that will filter down from a 53-foot skylight.

The renderings show commuters gathering around a digital subway information kiosk in the center of the brand new station, which will offer connections among 10 subway lines. The station will have large LCD screens and scrolling messages to tell people about schedule changes and arriving trains.

In addition to serving as a connection point for thousands of commuters each day, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority hopes the station will become a gathering space for Lower Manhattan's residents, tourists and office workers. The glass-walled transit center and the adjacent historic Corbin Building will include about 70,000 square feet of shops, restaurants and office space.

This exclusive tour will be led by Uday Durg, Senior Vice President and Program Executive for Lower Manhattan Projects at the MTA, and Ayala Malinovitz, Chief of Staff, MTA Capital Construction Company. Since this is an active construction site, all participants must wear work boots or steel-toed boots and must sign a liability release form. Hard hats and reflective vests will be provided by MTACC.

This Tour is free of charge for all attendees. SDA and AIA Continuing Education Credits: 2

RSVP to Pat Leyden by May 31, 2012.

The Tour will begin at 5 Maiden Lane, Suite 400. Please arrive by 8:15 am in order to sign the release form and get your safety gear. Due to security concerns, you MUST register by May 31st.
