CanstructionCanstruction® is an international charity competition where architects, engineers, contractors and students they mentor, compete to design and build giant structures made entirely from full cans of food. At the close of the competition all of the food from the New York City competition will be donated to City Harvest. New York City is joined by 100 cities across North America who will hold Canstruction® Competitions in the coming year. Highlighting the creativity and compassion of top architectural and engineering firms, these astounding structures are helping to change the world – by lifting the spirits of those in need, by raising public awareness, and most importantly, by collecting millions of pounds of food for local food banks. Structures are exhibited in the beautiful showrooms of the New York Design Center, 200 Lexington Avenue at 32nd Street. Each year the exhibition opens on the second Thursday in November and remains on view until the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Hours are Monday – Saturday, 9:00am to 5:00pm. Admission: One Can (or more) of food. All Student Group Tours must be reserved in advance by calling 212-679-9500 Ext. 19. There must be one chaperone for every 4 students. Students must be on their best behavior as each structure is hosted inside a high-end interior design showroom and there can be no risk of damage either to the showrooms or to the structures. The New York City Canstruction® Competition is now in its 15th year thanks to the hundreds of volunteers, contributors and participants who dedicate their time and talent. Complete listings of firms, jurors, contributors and committee members are available in the Downloads section. The New York City competition is Co-Sponsored by the Society for Design Administration, AIA New York Chapter and the New York Design Center.
